Each legislative session, bills are introduced and some are scheduled for hearings. Hearing notices need to be publicly posted by first referral committees at least 72 hours in advance before the convening of a committee hearing and 48 hours before subsequent referral committee hearings.
The hearing notices include bills that fall under the committee's jurisdiction, date and time of the hearing, list of committee chairs and/or members, and other pertinent information, such as number of copies required and where to send testimony. Starting last session, links to bills, status sheets, as well as links to submit testimony were included in the electronic versions.
For the most part, committee chairs control their committee's agenda and schedule the bills that they feel should move through the legislative process. If you are interested in a particular subject-matter bill and would like to receive hearing notices, the most effective way to receive them is to sign-up for the notices electronically. Click here.
